CAS Interview Questions: What UK Visa Officers Actually Ask

The Genuine Student credibility interview (often still called the "CAS interview") exists to check one thing: that you genuinely intend to study, not to use the visa route for something else. It's not designed to trick you — but vague or rehearsed-sounding answers are treated as a real risk signal.

Question areas that consistently come up

  • Why this course — specific modules and how they build on your background
  • Why this university — what specifically drew you, beyond ranking or reputation
  • Why the UK — compared with studying in your home country or elsewhere
  • Course content and structure — enough detail to show you've actually read the syllabus
  • Career plans after graduation — and how this course connects to them
  • Funding — who is sponsoring you, and whether you can explain the source of funds clearly
  • Family and ties back home — your intentions once the course ends

What actually goes wrong in practice

The most common failure isn't a wrong answer — it's an answer that sounds memorised. If you can't explain your own course content in your own words, or your career plan sounds disconnected from what you're studying, that inconsistency is exactly what the interview is designed to surface.

How to actually prepare

Read your course page and module list properly — not just the university's marketing paragraph. Be ready to explain your funding source in plain terms, including who is paying and how. And practice saying your answers out loud; a good answer on paper often sounds hesitant the first time you say it out loud, which is exactly what an interviewer would notice.

Our student assistant runs a live mock interview covering these exact question areas, with feedback after each answer — a better way to prepare than memorising a script.
